Literature that came from Britain during the middle(a) ages was written in several different languages including Latin and French. Religion and philosophy played an definitive role in the belles-lettres of the medieval centuries. Additionally, during this time, handwritten fictional stories began to arise. Because the only way to model writing was to copy it by hand, and because it could only be written by someone who was literate and trained to write, books were difficult to attain and writings were hard to spread. In the middle ages, the Bible was an important reading source for Britain and most of western Europe. IN the 13th century the Bible began to be copied in large quantities. With the Greek root of hagios meaning holy and graphe meaning writing, these were a form of biographies that told more or less the lives of the catholic saints. Another major agent from Britain was Geoffrey Chaucer. Although he wrote many books and poems his most famous work is The Canterbury Tales. The written report is about several pilgrims traveling together who exchange stories with one-another.
