Title: The Melting Temperature of a Pure Substance
suggest: The purpose of this experiment was to describe the noticeable changes in a graph showing the phase change of Paradichlorobenzene from a liquified to a solid.
Introduction: Paradichlorobenzene is a substance that is used for a variety of purposes. It is used in pesticides as well as to repel moths, rodents, dogs, mildews, mold, etc. It is also used in movable toilets to reduce odor. The melting point and freezing point, or equilibrium, of Paradichlorobenzene lies in the range of 52-56 °C. Its molecular formula is C6H4C12, and its atomic weight is 147.01 amu.
Materials: The quest materials were used for this experiment,
* Paradichlorobenzene
* 2 400mL beakers three-fourths filled with water
* 2 thermometers
* basketball hoop stand
* Timer
* Safety goggles
* Hot plate
* Recording sheet
* Pencil
* Test tube
* Ring clamp
Methods/process: The procedure used for this lab was detailed on the exit entitled The Melting Temperature of a Pure Substance. On direction b on Part 1 the temperature of the warm plate was not set on medium, but sooner on 8.
For the first part of the lab, the first 400mL beaker was placed on the hot plate at setting 8. The canvass tube containing the Paradichlorobenzene was then placed into the hot water bathe using the ring clamp until it was completely melted and its temperature reached the 65-70 °C range, which was determined using the first thermometer. The second 400mL beaker was placed on the base of the ring stand, and the test tube was then clamped all over it. Once ready, the temperature of the Paradichlorobenzene sample was recorded using the thermometer and the lower one-half of the test tube was immersed in the water bath.
