Windshield Survey Reflection
For my Windshield Survey, I chose to review a community near my hometown, which was the easterly side of Lancaster in California. This neighborhood is very diverse with some ethnicities, age groups, religions, and has both dense suburbia and rural areas to it. I knew I would learn a lot about disparate types of communities and their issues from just this specific area, and that I did! This community had several issues in adopt of nursing intervention that fit into the broad need for community/ public healthcare and nursing, and many of them fit easily with the focus and goals for HealthyPeople2020. I chose, however, to spotlight on the issues of adolescent motherhood and substance abuse.
According to the National Campaign to Prevent teen and Unplanned Pregnancy, after fourteen straight years of decline, tercet in ten girls in the United States become significant by age 20 and the teen pregnancy and receive grade are now on the rise. At present, in that respect are about 750,000 teen pregnancies and more than 400,000 teen births each year (2010). In Lancaster, Calif. the teen pregnancy rate is the second highest for all told of Los Angeles County.
Community nurses need to be aware of the trends that are simply having an effect on families. In this case, the first events seen may be an increase in high school dropout rate and less children receiving their immunizations. These both could be a result of teen pregnancies and a lack of resources available. One helpful community nursing diagnosing is ineffective community coping. With rising rates in unwitting pregnancies and birth, prevention needs to start somewhere. Some interventions could include increase awareness in the community by reporting these rates via local newspaper or other media.
