Janie learns about how she grows throughout individually of her marriages, and what each one teaches her. When she is unite to Joe Starks, she learns the most. She learns to keep her mouth shut when appropriate, and when to open it when needed. She learns to talk some and leave some. Before, when she was married to Logan, Janie would assure what was on her mind, and what she thought about the situation, rather than keep it to herself, merely as the years pass by while shes married to Joe, she learns that speaking her mind will only stop over up hurting her.
While she is married to Joe, she also learns that she is not that young anymore, and she is starting to grow old. Janie learns that all the years that harbour passed by have made her more mature and she has handsome in her mind. Growing old, she has matured.
