In ninth grade a teacher assign my class to read the al-Quran To Kill a Mockingbird. This was a book that, from reputation, I assumed to be boring; I assumed constitutely. The teacher told our class that we were going to learn rough racism, social inequality, and the importance of family. Thats exactly what we learned; as a result I had nonhing but distaste for a book that I already knew the content of. So from existence told what we were going to learn did we actually learn anything? Yes, because through discourse and analysis everybody could learn something. But did we learn it in a way that we will retain information taught? No. Books that are overused and outdated are lost on students who cannot unite with a situation that would never happen to a high prepare student. A books content and how well they connect with a book determines how well they will do in an English class. The use of books in an English means is of course a great way to teach analytical and rhetorical devices. Books give teachers the whole package; they are fitted to show tricks of the trade, illustrate uses of literary devices, all the while pedagogics about the hidden messages the author was trying to make, but when the books content is unrealistic and boring, then it becomes a scam. The teachers audience and the books content before long becomes evanescent; in turn students lose interest, grades drop, and the teachers audience is gone.
