Cultural Differences
In the serve well of moving to a new-fangled continent an immigrant has to choose among keeping his pilot light culture and adapting to a brand new culture. In the essay Two Ways to Belong in America by Bharati Mukherjee she writes, both her and her sis arrive to the states in the early 1960s to study at Universities. Both Muhkerjee and her sister were raised with identical views on life back in Calcutta. Each sister takes differently to one and separates lifestyle. One pauperizations to continue the Indian heritage and the other wants to build a new life style. I agree with Mukherjees ideas of adapting to a new culture, but in addition agree with creation able to decide whether one want to keep their original culture.
I agree with Mukherjees aspect of living foreswearly and re-inventing ones self. Mukherjee considers herself an Ameri abide citizen, she also went out of her cultural traditions and married and American. This is how Mukherjee attained her citizenship. Mukherjee says I was opting for fluidity, self invented… and renouncing 3,000 years (ar least) of case-observant(309). We can see by Mukherjees actions, she is an open minded and free spirited person.
Mukherjee also claims that mongrelization is a word she celebrates. In other words, she believes in re-inventing and re-creating ones self. This is what Mukherjee has been doing ever since she moved to America. This is also what my parents did when they moved to California. The only thing that changed from my parents life was that they were making American dollars now. The moving of countries did not seem to bother my parents in anyway, so they tell me. My parents still kept the traditions from where they were raised, my father being from Mexico and my fetch being from El Salvador. Mukherjee states she feels comfortable and at home in America.
