In the disk Collapse, Diamond summarizes several different civilizations where environmental impacts such as deforestation, climate, pollution, and loss of productive top soils lead to their downfall. He starts the password by outlining current day Bitterroot Valley in Montana, and therefore covers Easter Island, Pitcairn Island, Henderson Island, Anasazi and their neighbors, and the Mayan Collapse. In the next couple of chapters it goes on to summarize what possibly led to the Viking and Norse Greenlander collapse. Diamond then turns in the opposite direction to talk about the supremacy of the New Guinea highlands, Tikioia, and Tokugawa, Japan. Part three of Collapse covers new-fangled collapses such as Rwanada, The Dominican Republic, Haiti, China, and Australia. Toward the end of the book, Diamond gives his advice on how we might avoid the fate of failed societies.

The biggest toxic waste issue is caused by leftover materials from metal mining. Copper, lead, molybdenum, palladium, platinum, zinc, gold, and silver mining are the backbone to Montanas economy. The waste leaks into our imbibition water, rivers, and seeps into our soil causing harm not only to us, still excessively to fish, wildlife, livestock, and vegetation.
A second set of environmental problems in Montana involves the logging and burning of its forests. (Diamond pg. 41) Commercial logging was do to obtain wood for timber and making paper.
