A study in beguilement and subterfuge detection by new occupational therapy undergraduates.

Abstract


In this study it is identified how easy it is for people to abide by whether or not others are telling the truth or attempting to beguile and mislead them. There are no particular facial expression or body language movements that assert when subjects are lying. But this unconscious leakage is all that the subjects had to contain them on others transparency.
Role play was the subject matter by which the 17 participants created deception, during a psychology tutorial. The participants were all in the raw undergraduates on an occupational therapy course of mixed age range, behavior experience and predominately female. They had kn sustain each other for less than a month. Therefore a key question was would they be qualified to detect transparency much easily with this limited knowledge, or would this lead to a higher rate of wrong judgments

DePaulo and Pfeifer (1986) carried out a study of 3 groups of 100 subjects; new undergraduates, new police force enforcement officers and experienced law enforcement officers to see if on the job experience improved the someones experience at detecting deception. They showed there was no significant level of difference between the 3 groups at the accuracy in detecting lies. Yet the more ripe group of participants was more confident to begin with and their confidences in their own abilities grew during the study.
