Winsor McCay: Pioneer of Early Animation Winsor McCay was one of animations first stars of commercial significance. Born the countersign of a lumber contractor who would repeatedly try to aim him into being a businessman, McCay instead nurtured his compulsive urge to pull back and learned his craft less by formal schooling and more by observation and practice. He went on to render a prominent newspaper cartoonist.

While his cartoons were never overwhelmingly popular, they were critically recognized then and now for their expressive graphical style. During his time as a cartoonist, he also began a side-career as a vaudeville theater chicken feed-talk artist (an artist who would stand in front of an audience and draw on a chalk board) before seeing the potential inherent in the new medium of animation (Callahan, 1988). His background in comics and vaudeville would go on to inform his animated work. In February of 1914, Gertie the Dinosaur (1914), which would go on to become one of his most famous works, debuted as a new feature to his regular vaudeville chalk talk.
